Where to Start When Decorating a Home Office

A home office should be as warm and welcoming as any other room in your home.  It should be a space that you look forward to going to every workday.  Today I’m talking about where to start when decorating a home office and what pieces make for a functional space.

Where to Start When Decorating a Home Office

Choose a Color Palette

Since I’m most productive in serene surroundings, sea-glass blue is usually my go-to color of choice.  Against that backdrop, I would fill the space with furnishings of wood tones and cozy fabrics.

Create a Focal Point

My hands-down must-have in a home office is a desk.  The desk is front-and-center, and it will make the biggest statement.  To me, this is the first piece of furniture I start with, and then decorate the room around it.

Think Form + Function Furniture Pieces

Choose pieces that look as beautiful as they function to maintain the office’s overall aesthetic.  Bookcases help minimize loose paperwork and assorted glass and wooden bowls do the dirty work of corralling pens, paper clips, business cards while baskets are my favorite way to store other miscellaneous items.

Add Warmth & Cozy Accents

One you have the essentials, add in some cozy textures and personal decor to really spark your creativity.

Some ways to create warmth in your home office is with a stylish lamp, a fabric-covered bulletin board, and a cozy rug. Adore your walls with artwork and photos that speaks to you. For me that’s abstract canvas prints and family photos.

Below are some of my favorite pieces for creating a stylish (and productive!) home office.
